Teacher Spotlight: Mr. Roberto Moreno

Behind every graduate are several dedicated teachers. We’re grateful to our succeed teachers, and that’s why we take a moment to shed the light on them in our official website Teacher Spotlight.

This week we have the honor to invite the dean Mr. Roberto Moreno to learn about his personal background, why he came to work in Shenzhen, why he works at Oak Hill Shenzhen Campus, and his teaching experience of the innovative Chinese-English immersion bilingual program.

The motto of the Dean :

Surround yourself with people who are different than you. They teach you perspective and a new way to look at life. Take advantage of time since it is the only thing you cannot get back.

Roberto Moreno has been with KL since 2016, and since then he has helped many KL students excel in their learning. So far, he has been an educator for over 10 years now. Before he came to KL, he was a college professor and a journalist.

When he is not teaching, Mr. Moreno enjoys spending time traveling. He told us,” I’ve always been fascinated by the world. I also like meeting people and learning different perspectives. To me, the best way to learn about life is to experience it firsthand. A book can only give you one perspective, but being in a place and experiencing the people, foods, cultures, traditions, and documenting it is just indescribable.” Moreover, he picked up photography as a hobby during his journalism years. When we mentioned photography, he said: “I enjoy the ability to capture life, especially of the local places I visit. I feel now days, with phones, anyone can take a photo. However, capturing a moment in time that tells a story is a little more difficult. I’m not taking the photo for me as much as I am trying to show why this place or person is unique.”

In the picture below, you can see Mr. Moreno’s photography from all around the world.

As an educator, he has served many roles in this industry for 10 years, Mr. Moreno told us he is particularly satisfied for his role at KL. “We have been fortunate at Oak Hill to have some pretty awesome students. I have been inspired by their motivation and tenacity. I can’t say I have one moment. I think the idea of community and thoughtfulness is something I am proud at Oak Hill,” said Mr. Moreno, “I have also come to know the KL teachers and staff and they are some of the finest I have ever worked with”.

When it comes to advice, Mr. Moreno wants to tell students an important thing for achieving success at KL is, “The best was to learn is to find something you like (video games, sports, TV shows, fashion) and read about it in English. Half the time we end up reading things as students we do not want to read. However, when we are interested in a hobby or have a passion reading and finding out new things about it never gets boring.”
